Native to New Zealand: Ake ake (Dodonaea viscosa) is a shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It’s also found in other South Pacific countries and Australia.


Hardwood and Traditional Uses: The wood of Ake ake is particularly hard and durable. Maori people prized it for making weapons like taiaha, paddles, and other tools. The name “Ake ake” means “forever forever” in Maori, emphasizing its strength and endurance.


Medicinal Properties: Ake ake has been used in Maori traditional medicine (rongoa) for generations. Different parts of the plant have various healing properties. It’s known to be beneficial for degenerative diseases, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, asthma, and obesity. The leaves and bark can be used externally for burns and swelling reduction. Ake ake leaves are rich in antioxidants, making them suitable for healing teas. They can even be chewed for toothache relief.


Variety of Colors: Different Ake ake species exhibit unique colors. For example:
Purple Ake Ake: Ranges from bright vivid red to deep maroon-purple.
Chatham Island Ake Ake: Silvery green.
Other varieties: Display lime and bright greens.


All Ake ake trees thrive in poor conditions, such as dry or sandy soil.
